Bruce Protocol VO₂ Max Calculator

This calculator estimates VO₂ max using the Bruce Protocol treadmill stress test. It measures cardiovascular endurance based on exercise duration and provides an approximation of oxygen uptake (mL/kg/min), helping athletes and clinicians evaluate heart and lung fitness.

Bruce Protocol VO₂ Max Calculation Formulas

Formula
$$\text{For Men:} \quad VO_{2\ max} = 14.8 – (1.379 \cdot T) + (0.451 \cdot T^2) – (0.012 \cdot T^3)$$ $$\text{For Women:} \quad VO_{2\ max} = 4.38 \cdot T – 3.9$$

Where:

  • $$TTT$$ = total time on treadmill in minutes (including partial stages)
  • $$VO2 maxVO_{2\ max}VO2 max$$ = volume of oxygen consumed per minute per kg of body weight

The Bruce Protocol is a standardized treadmill test designed to evaluate cardiovascular health and aerobic endurance. Each stage lasts 3 minutes, with incremental increases in speed and incline. The calculator determines estimated VO₂ max, a key metric of physical fitness, using time duration and gender-specific formulas. It’s commonly used in fitness assessments, sports medicine, and cardiology to gauge how efficiently the body uses oxygen under stress.
